Sciatica: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Sciatica is pain or altered sensation along the sciatic nerve, often caused by irritation or compression of a lower-back nerve root. Symptoms may travel from the back or buttock into the leg.

Treatment

Treatment may include staying appropriately active, physiotherapy, stretching and strengthening exercises, and medicines prescribed by a doctor. In selected cases, an injection may be considered. Surgery may be recommended for persistent disabling symptoms, progressive weakness, or urgent conditions such as loss of bladder or bowel control.
